Questions
When one address redirects to a second, which redirects to a third. Each hop adds delay for visitors and for search engine crawlers, and chains are a common leftover from site moves and https switches.
A 301 (or 308) is permanent: it tells search engines the new address replaces the old one. A 302 (or 307) is temporary: it says the old address is still the real one. Use a permanent redirect for anything that is not coming back.
One is fine. Two is worth tidying. Three or more should be collapsed into a single redirect. Google follows a limited number of hops, and every extra one slows the page.
A clean permanent redirect passes the old address's signals to the new one. Problems come from chains, loops, temporary redirects used for permanent moves, and redirects that land on an error page.
Visitors reach a site in four ways. All four should finish on one address. If they do not, search engines may treat them as separate copies of your site and split your rankings.
