The small icon shown in a browser tab, in bookmarks and, on phones, on the home screen. Google also shows it next to your result in mobile search.
A favicon.ico for old and new browsers, a 32 x 32 and 16 x 16 PNG, a 180 x 180 Apple touch icon and 192 and 512 pixel icons for Android through a manifest. The ZIP from this tool has them all, plus the HTML tags to paste in your head.
A square logo, ideally a PNG with a transparent background and at least 512 x 512 pixels. Simple shapes work best because a favicon is shown as small as 16 pixels.
To the root of your site, so favicon.ico opens at yourdomain.com/favicon.ico, then paste the tags in the head of your pages. On Shopify and WordPress you can upload the PNG in the theme or site settings instead.
Browsers and Google cache icons for a long time. Check that yourdomain.com/favicon.ico opens, that the icon is at least 48 x 48 pixels for Google, and give it a few days.
