I bought fake Google reviews. What happens now?

What happens if I bought fake Google reviews?

4 min read

Short answer

Google can remove them, often in waves, and repeated violations can restrict or suspend your profile. Stop buying, do not accept a “replacement” from the seller, check what is still live, and rebuild with genuine reviews from real customers. Nobody can guarantee that bought reviews stay, and another purchase repeats the same pattern.

What can happen

The reviews can disappear, sometimes all at once and sometimes in batches over weeks or months. A rating that jumped up can fall back to where it started, or lower if the removed reviews were the only recent ones.

Google can also block new reviews, show a warning on the listing, or restrict the profile. A restricted or suspended profile drops out of Maps and local results, which is far more costly than the reviews were worth.

None of this is certain for every business. It depends on what was bought, how obvious the pattern is, and what Google's systems see. That is exactly why “it has been fine so far” is not a safe position.

What to do in the first week

Stop. Do not buy more, and do not accept a “free replacement” from the seller when reviews disappear. Replacements arrive through the same accounts and repeat the same pattern.

Keep a record of what you bought and when, and note which reviews are live now. Check your email and the Business Profile for any message or warning from Google, and do not ignore it.

Do not try to delete or edit the reviews yourself in a rush, and do not ask the people who posted them to change anything. Let the real reviews stand and work on adding more.

If the profile is restricted or suspended

Read the message from Google carefully. It usually names the policy that was broken. Fix the cause first, which here means stopping the practice, then use the reinstatement route Google offers in the Business Profile.

Be accurate and brief in your request. Reinstatement is not guaranteed and can take time, so do not build a launch or an ad budget around the profile coming back by a date.

Rebuild the honest way

Your best asset is the list of customers who really bought from you. Ask all of them, in small batches, with a direct review link and a personal message. Ask new customers right after each sale or service. Reply to every review.

It is slower than a purchase for the first few weeks and much safer after that. Reviews from real customers are not removed for being fake, and they keep working for the business month after month.

If a seller offers a guarantee

A guarantee that the reviews will stay is not something a seller can give, because the decision is Google's. “Guaranteed” usually means they will post more of the same when the first batch disappears.

The honest version of a guarantee is process: we ask every real customer, at the right time, and we report what came in.
